A quick check for anyone with a website: who owns your domain?

If the answer is "my web guy", you have a problem waiting to happen. The domain sits in his account, the site sits on his builder, and when he stops replying, so does your email. Leaving means starting again.

How to check

  • Look up your domain on a whois search and see whose name is on it.
  • Ask who holds the login for the domain and the hosting.
  • Ask what happens, and what it costs, if you want to move.
